BREATHLESS FOR RYNAH

Make a True Impact

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,  but by the moments that take our breath away.” Maya Angelou

Little Rynah du Plessis suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs,

digestive system and other organs in the body. Help us help her family raise the money to buy life-saving medicine

that stops this condition in its tracks for as long as she has access to it.

About Our Challenge

WHAT IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS?

CF is a genetic disorder inherited from parents - typically innocent and oblivious carriers of recessive genes. Only about 70 000 people worldwide suffer from this genetic condition, but the effects tend to be devastating.

At its heart CF causes the production of abnormally thick mucus, which has a domino effect throughout the body.  This progressive genetic disease clogs up and erodes life-giving lung function, hampers the body’s ability to digest food, and ultimately impacts all of the body’s organs.  Patients with CF have an unpredictable course, but all have a reduced life expectancy. Screening is easy and if diagnosed early, life-prolonging treatment is available.

HOW DOES CF
AFFECT RYNAH?

We have decided that this will not define our little girl.

In fact this makes us own the 'now' and demands we all live each day to the fullest.

We trust in God's plans for her life and that He holds her in His hands.

There is a treatment, which due to its efficacy, has seen the unexpected closure of long-standing CF wards which are no longer needed. This groundbreaking modulator therapy drug, Trikafta, is not accessible in South Africa yet. This is due to extremely high costs (listed as between US $270,000 to US $310,000 annually). A generic from Argentina, namely Trixicar, is available at 10% of the cost, but patent rights prohibit them from exporting the medication to South Africa. With a special license, and travel to Argentina, we will be able to buy a year's supply at a time for Rynah. This drug promises Rynah both a normal life expectancy and a higher quality of life. The younger she starts the meds, the more it prevents the progressive damage caused by CF. Read more and find references under Our Mission.
